Mangalore: Waves suck away two youngsters at Suratkal

Mangalore, Feb 17: In a freak incident which occurred at Mallamar Beach near NITK Suratkal on Sunday February 16, two persons died due to drowning in Arabian Sea.
They have been identified as Sriram (22) and Ashwin (24), hailing from Gokulnagar in Kulai here.
The two friends reportedly wanted to spend their weekly off by bathing at sea. Around noon, they reached the beach. Both of them were sitting among huge boulders on the shore and chatting among themselves, when a huge wave which hit the shore at around 3 pm pulled Sriram away into the sea. Ashwin is said to have instantly tried to save his friend, but he failed in his effort, and drowned.
A friend of the duo, named Muttulingam, who said he had reached the spot about 30 minutes earlier to the tragedy, said that his friends had called him over the phone to join them in the fun. Bodies of the youth were recovered sometime after the incident. S
riram, a diploma holder, was working in the marketing division of a private concern. He was the elder of the two children of his father, Satyanarayana Rao, and has left behind his parents and a sister.
Ashwin was self employed, and owned a JCB, which he hired under the name, ’Vighneshwara Earth Movers’. He was the eldest of the three children of Mohan Putran, who works as a flower vendor at Bykampady. He is survived by parents, a brother, and a sister.
MLA, B A Mohiuddin Bava, and other leaders visited the spot and pacified the bereaved families. They promised to speak to the deputy commissioner of the district towards getting as high a compensation as possible from the government.
Suratkal station house officer, M A Nataraj, and Kumareshwaran, who is in-charge of law and order division, visited the spot and registered a case.
