Mangalore: 2,573 police personnel to be deployed for Modi rally in city

Mangalore, Feb 16: The 'Bharata Gellisi' public rally, which will be addressed by BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Tuesday February 18, will be held amidst tight police security.
Addressing a press meet at his office on Sunday February 16, city police commissioner R Hitendra said that seven officers of DCP/SP rank, 25 ACPs/DySPs, 67 police inspectors,157sub-inspectors, 211 assistant sub-inspectors, 1,450 head constables and police constables, 221 women police constables, 135 traffic police staff, 300 home guards, altogether 2,573 police personnel from the city and other districts will be deployed for the rally.
"As many as 12 KSRP teams, eight ASCs, one RAF, two bomb detection squads, one disaster management team, 13 checkposts, 16 temporary outposts, five fire tenders and five ambulances will also be on standby. The organizers have confirmed the participation of one lac people in the event. We feel that approximately 75,000 people would be present," he said.
He added that traffic diversions will also be put in place to prevent blocks and to avoid any untoward incidents.
"Traffic diversions will be brought into effect at various points in the city, not only for those visiting the venue, but also for others including the city buses, private buses and KSRTC buses as well. Vehicles are not allowed to enter the maidan, or even up to a few km from the venue. Parking facilities have been made at various points to avoid chaos and confusion," he said.
"Vehicles will be entering the city from Kottara Chowki, Nantoor, Pumpwell and Kankandy while the exit will be via Karavali road, Mahakali Padpu road, Kottara Chowki, Nantoor and Kuntikan. Parking will be banned within a radius of 500 meters from the venue from the previous day of the programme. Parking along the roadside on the route of the VIP vehicles is also banned on the day of the event. Parking facilities have been made at Ullal nursing home, Yemmerkere Maidan, Vaman Nayak Nandigudde Maidan, Morgansgate Maidan, Yekkur Maidan, a maidan near Kulur Renault showroom etc," he informed.
"The people who come to take part in the event are not permitted to carry matchbox, lighter, water bottle, bag, camera etc and any sort of weapons or explosives," he added.
Narendra Modi will arrive at Mangalore airport and proceed to the venue via road and back to the airport after the programme, he added.
DCP Jagadish and DCP Vishnuvardhan were present on the occasion.
