Udupi, Feb 15: As per a new scheme of the women and children welfare department, transgenders, for the first time in the state, will be bidding adieu to their age old tradition of working as sex workers or beggars. Four persons belonging to sexual minority are now ready to open a beauty parlour here towards becoming self-reliant.

These people have always been looked down with scorn by the society. Neither had they been showing the will to wriggle out of the situation, nor did the society take initiative to allow them to do something else. Women and child welfare department, which wants to give them a chance by way of this new experiment, has sanctioned a sum of Rs 20,000 to these four persons. They have decided to open a beauty parlour at Brahmavar in the district.

The transgenders along with sexual minorities have together given birth to ‘Ashraya’ community organization. The organization, which is behind the idea of opening a beauty parlour, wants to do more, based on the experiment. The plan, first of its kind in Karnataka, has given rise to new dreams in the dreary lives of these people.

These four persons, who are from Mandya, used to earn livelihood by dancing in dance bars of Bangalore and by begging at traffic intersections. They have completed their beautician courses at Manipal and now ready to become self employed. We hope they will succeed in their endeavour and provide impetus for more such projects to take life elsewhere in the state.
