Emmaus Counselling holds workshop on interpersonal relationships

Mapusa, Feb 13: A one day on Interpersonal relationships for teachers was organised by the Emmaus counselling Centre, Mapusa, on February 12.

It received participation from a total of 27 teachers. The resource persons for the day  Merlyn Fernandes, counsellor and  Tina D’Cunha, Assistant professor, St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, delivered interactive sessions on Transactional Analysis, Emotional Intelligence and Interpersonal Relationships between teachers and students.

The highlight of all the sessions was that as educators, every teacher works tirelessly to prepare every child for the future and works towards increasing the students potential to face the world. It is therefore imperative to structure communication, manage emotions and be competent in the relationships and dealings with persons in the school environment like students, colleagues, authorities, non teaching staff etc.

A highlight of the workshop was the role plays that the participants presented on areas of challenges of dealing with students and colleagues and strategies to manage the challenges. Various issues experienced by the teaching fraternity were reflected through the role plays and the general attitudes of the teachers in such experiences were enthusiastically demonstrated. The session was which involved the depiction followed by a detailed discussion was very encouraging and very well appreciated. Each participant provided feedback that this activity ignited their minds to reflect on their actions and reactions in dealing with people around them.

The day ended with the valedictory programme which was presided by Alphonso Pereira, principal, Fr Agnel Institute of Foods Crafts and Culinary Sciences, Verna, Goa, along with the resource persons and organizers. In his inspiring address Pereira was very appreciative of such workshops and highlighted how they contribute to self realization and a need to change. He reflected on how today a concept like Interpersonal Relationships holds prominence as in any industry there is a continuous interaction between colleagues, subordinates and superiors.

Such interactions demand the need for efficient teamwork which requires healthy relationship skills. Relating the need in the teaching field too, he invited teachers to ‘Be Good and Considerate Teachers’. He also encouraged the participants to implement the various inputs they received through the sessions.The valedictory session ended with the vote of thanks by Bro Malvino Alfonso.
