Kundapur: Thieves break into Kalikamba Temple, loot gold worth Rs 11.26 lac

Kundapur, Feb 6: Thieves broke into Kalikamba Temple, Katkere here late night on Wednesday February 5 and looted gold worth Rs 11.26 lac.
Sources said that on Wednesday night, two thieves entered the temple by breaking the windows at the back. The gold was kept in a vault which the thieves broke open with a gas cutter.
The vault had been inaugurated at the temple just a few days back. Gold offered to the deity by devotees during the annual feast of the temple about a fortnight back was kept in the vault.
As per a complaint filed by Karunakar Shetty, the thieves got away with 50 sovereigns of gold worth Rs 11.26 lac. However, temple committee members said that much more gold, at least 110 sovereigns worth Rs 30 lac was stolen, but added that the exact amount would be ascertained in a day.
The incident came to light in the morning when a temple priest came to perform puja. He informed the temple committee members and also the Kundapur police.
Kundapur circle inspector Divakar, SI Jayaram Gowda, fingerprint experts arrived at the spot. A canine squad from Udupi was also pressed into action.
A case has been registered in Kundapur police station.
