    REST IN PEACE Mr kunhi
Lets say there are no footpaths , do our people who drive educated included drive in such a way that the people can walk? No way they honk and people walking have to make way for the vehicle even if there is a footpath they want to drive over that.
Take the eg of the strip of road in front of bendur church , the vehicles just try to mow u down, knowing that the pedestrians walk on the road.another eg is Road near manohar vilas , the vehicles drive over the mud path too and the attitude of the vehicle drives ... God help us. why only blame the system why cant each one of us first obey the rules , like when sm
someone is trying to cross should be only on the zebra crossing , and the driver stops to let go the person , here the person behind will charge n mow u down . low beams during night . when there is a jam there are more than four lanes on one side of the road and the other side has no road left for the vehicles and so the jam increases , if we all wait patiently for a few mins in a queue the jam will get over fast , but no ricks bikes will block the road so etc etc. no point i always blaming the govt that is what we Indians are famous for , i should change first then everything will fall in place.

It is a very sad incident.Unfortunately, it happens very often in Mangalore.Due to our traffic control divisions, department negligence ,no pathway is there for pedestrians.Every vehicle, including Rikshas cars everyone is tingling through any holes there are causes accidents of many pedestrians. As they planned traffic roads,a pedestrians separate way was important, a must.but even now is not late.If they want they can.But nobody is bothered.second ,why police have to come from kadri? no Police in kankanady?and they are supposed to be bit Controlling traffic.not sitting and waiting for a call.

If i am not mistaken that spot has taken more than one life. (Due to accidents)

It is the result of reckless/careless driving.

May the departed soul rest in Heavenly Abode.

@Edward R. Monteiro. Even if i am in KSA now, I frequently visit my home town Mangalore and i am well aware of the traffic situation there. The reason i commented is, let us pay some respect to the departed soul and little condolences to his family instead of blame game as usual.

I do not have details of the accident. However the crux of the problem seems to be that all over Mangalore it is hard to find a single decent foot path. It occurs to me that The Corporation has provided comfort for the elite owning vehicles, but not much attention has been paid to the poor pedestrians.

We have now Mr. J.R. Lobo who spends a lot time studying local problems. I have no doubt that he undertake putting up footpaths on a war footing.

When these concrete roads were built, no plans were there for the footpaths by the then administration. Now there is no other way left either to build the footpaths by laying slabs on the sides on the water flow area (if existing) or by acquiring land on the sides. You are saying the dividers of the road are as high as 1 ft. If they are of less height, in a city like Mangalore, where there are no traffic rules followed, the vehicles will cross those dividers at any place they like. Just look at the footpath built opp. St.Aloysius bus stop. It is so low and the side is made slope, so that the vehicles go over it & park on the footpath. This facility is given by civic administration!!

Sir, the prime consideration should be given to children and sr. citizens safety, just imagine a young 6 foot tall guy finds it difficult to cross these dividers how can a sr. citizen or child ever does it!! Whenever, have a look at the road opp. KSRTC main bus stand, even in the absence of footpath throughout bikes, big SUVs, autos are parked with impunity outside the many eateries out there, and over and above that frequent buses both local and tourist, there is no signal, no traffic cop, local buses honking like there is no tomorrow and speeding up, it is difficult even for a young healthy man to pass in this area!! A sr. citizen or child would definitely have to go to the next cutout to cross this damned road if he loves his life!!

Acquiring land now and wishing for footpaths would be wishful thinking , the only way out is skywalks at every such place or Mangluru is doomed from the infrastructure point of view!! And what does a man require is peaceful living atmosphere and decent infrastructure, not huge concrete buildings, high end SUVs, huge malls, and the sky high land and flat rates??? Infrastructure deficiency is an added point to the various woes plaguing this place!! Already many were comparing it with Bihar!!! Jai Ho!!

I agree with you that prime consideration should be given to children & Sr.Citizens. And I would say in general to all pedestrians. But do u know that nobody should cross the road anywhere they like and they should cross the road at the zebra crossing marks only. Of course, I would agree there are no such crossings at important places in Mangalore city. Even if there are in some places, people ignore it and try to cross over the dividers at any place they like. This causes great problems to safe drivers like me. Because if you apply brakes, there are big animals (esp.city busses) behind, honking at the safe drivers and even abusing like anything. So, it is safer for pedestrians to cross the roads only at the designated places.

Really sad. The 'booms and dooms' of unplanned rapid development are obvious in Mangalore. Least importance to civilian safety. Last year when I was in Mangalore, was shocked to see that while new roads were laid/existing roads widened, but no footpaths built for pedestrians? Instead, existing footpaths were demolished to widen roads? Can an elderly or physically handicapped citizen ever walk safely on those roads where the traffic rules are least adhered to? God save our Mangalore....

The speed at which buses and trucks move are very dangerous.their speed is the same be it a highway or a busy street with people moving around.their speed needs to be controlled by the authorities for pleasant driving for others.

Mangluru zero importance has been given for pedestrians in most places!!

Just see the corner opp to KSRTC bus stand where umpteen rickshaws are parked in a line sometimes side by side with absolutely no place left for pedestrians and in the gap between the autos and the giant divider huge multiaxel Volvo buses pass to get into the bus stand. Also, there is a sharp gradient when you get down with very uneven undone surface and huge stones jetting haphazardly, a place I am sure no sr. citizen will be able to walk!! Just outside the various travel agents huge Volvos and other buses of different cos. halt to pick passengers with no inch space for the pedestrians!! Even a small nudge from such heavy vehicles is enough to send one to heaven in a moment!! But nobody is bothered!! If you request the auto drivers not to park side by side, they literally come to assault in a group!! It is indeed a chaotic state!! Just imagine today the population of Mangalore is only 6 lacs if it were to go up by even 3 times (and that so many vehicles) what will be the state of affairs!!! Overall, it is not at all a place worth settling down from the long term point of view because of its poor planning compared to places like a Navi Mumbai or Pune!! Jai ho!!

I am sure you would have and will become furious looking at the traffic situation. I lived in KSA 30 years ago and seen the spate of accidents taking place over there THEN.So do not comment siting in KSA. Come and see the reality today and then you will understand better.

From Kankanady circle till Nsndigudda circle nice concrete roads have been built, but no walkway for pedestrians. Little space from either sides are occupied either by parked vehicles or various roadside vendors! Most of the time one can see pedestrians walking on the concrete roads itself dodging vehicles passing by! Constructing proper footpath for the pedestrians is the need of the hour for Mangalore city! May the departed soul Rest in peace!

Since there is hardly a inch of space left, it defies imagination how they will manage to make footpaths in the future too!! Also the road dividers at some places are more than a foot high making it very tough and dangerous for children and sr. citizens to trudge to go to the other side as if one even slightly loses balance and giddy he will come starkly in front of an oncoming vehicle which move inches away from these killer dividers, that is how the planning has been done!!!

Sad. RIP. Could he be a sole bread
winner? May be a father of small children? Son of old parents ?

Did the eye witness say that the bus came to the walking victim or the victim was on the way of moving bus ? Whatever the method be, our mortal body won't withstand a metal structure.

Best advice - be on the footpath while walking and cross with care at designated points. Do not dash across thinking that the driver will stop for you. He has several worries - you may not be one of those.

    Madam Lydia,
Where are the footpaths in Mangalore.
Valencia roads would have been very nice ,but we have some people who creat problems to stop the work of Valencia roads,If the trees would have cut down & planted new plants same time, now the plants would have grown big & roads of Valencia would have had a good look.
Instead, there is a stay & case is going not to cut the trees.
The person who put case who loves the tress as furniture made of all wood in his house.

These bus chassis vehicles should be allowed to come in only during night times because as they have huge open gaps on the sides between the front and back tires, which can easily trap an unwary pedestrian w/o the driver knowing and a sure death for the victim!! May his soul RIP!!!

Well, I was on the accident spot.Mohammed Kunhi (55),was busy on the phone while walking on the road n did not notice the huge beast on the road. daiji needs to add this sentence. Don't just blame the driver of Tata bus chassis, he was helpless cause he was not anywhere visible to the driver, what can the driver do when that man came n fell to his death. Go n check the cc cameras which is installed in ATM n other shops there.

Good point, one doubt this man hit the bus chassis from the front or the rear wheels. The picture shows the blood near the rear wheels. But if he hit from the front side no doubt whatever be the reason driver is responsible not only in Mangalore elsewhere also, but if he hit to the rear wheels then the driver is not at fault driver can not do anything.

    very tragic.
Exactly last Thursday, a lorry rammed into a car at the this circle at around 8.15 am. Luckily no one was hurt. Unfortunate was, the driver never bothered to get down, but instead drove away casually. But was later chased and made to stop a few hundred meters away. Reckless driving. God save the pedestrians.
