Ponda, Feb 4 (TNN): Ponda police arrested an electrician from Akola-Karwar, Karnataka, on charges of raping a woman over the last eight months in Ponda.

The complaint was lodged by the woman's husband. The couple hail from Sawantwadi, Maharashtra. Speaking to TOI, Ponda police said that the woman had kept quiet as she was threatened by the accused.

"The accused person, Ganesh Gowda, a native of Akola and the woman's family were staying in the same neighbourhood and the crime was being carried out for about eight months. The matter came to light when her husband spotted them on Friday," said a police officer. The woman has told police that the accused had threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed her ordeal to anyone, police said.

The accused was working as an electrician for a private company while the victim is a housewife with a three-year-old daughter. "The woman's family had shifted to Tisk-Usgao about eight months ago and since then, the incidents have been going on," police added. Police have arrested the accused under Sections 376 and 506 part II of the Indian Penal Code.

The accused and the survivor were sent to the Goa medical college (GMC) and hospital for medical examination late Monday evening and the report is awaited, police said.
