Foreign student alleges sexual harassment on Bangalore-Mangalore flight

Mangalore, Jan 28: In a shocking incident, a foreign student studying in a college in Mangalore was allegedly sexually harassed on Bangalore-Mangalore Jet Airways flight on Tuesday January 28.


 

The girl has alleged that she was sexually harassed by a man later identified as Ankur Agarwal Kumar (36), hailing from Uttar Pradesh. He is said to be employed at Manipal.

The girl is said to be a Malaysian, aged around 18 years.

It is said that after the flight landed at 8.30 am, the man hired a taxi from Mangalore airport and left towards Kavoor. The girl, however, approached the Jet Airways staff at the airport and lodged a complaint.

The man was then called back to the airport and subjected to questioning.

Police too arrived at the airport. After enquiry by the airport staff, he was taken to Bajpe police and interrogated. He was taken into custody and sent for medical examination. Sources said that during questioning, Agarwal denied the charges and said that he might have 'touched' her unintentionally when he fell asleep during the flight.

Agarwal is a married man with two children, it is learnt.

A case has been registered in Bajpe police station.

    As published in a section of the newspaper the man concerned is a responsible utive of Manipal group and he himself is not aware of such incident. (He may be wrong also.). My sincere advice to all my gentleman friends - please do not occupy any seat next to a lady in any public place or public transport and also do not allow any lady to sit next to you in such places. Anything can happen to you without your knowledge.

    The seats in Jet flight ATR 72 (normally this is the flight that travels between Hyderabad-Bangalore-Mangalore) are very clumsy & narrow. It is horrific experience, if you have a female passenger next to you as a small movement of yours may touch your fellow passenger. You may have sit like a stone, in such circumstances.

    Though this may not be the case in the present issue, this is really a problem to reckon.

    Anyone ever been to U.P. or Bihar or nearby states of U.P. and stayed there for some days ( away from safer/secure zones)? You will learn many things about UP people. U will encounter robbery, abuse of all sorts, goondiasm, stalking, etc. Train travel in northern states will be a challenge. U will be pushed out of running train if you do not oblige them. If you are a student staying in hostels, raggin to the extreme is a guaranteed treatment. Rural scene is also pretty bad, Local panchayaths issue non-sensical judgements completely biased against women. Men are supreme in U.P. Outsiders who are innocent will have horrific time. The abrasive nature of U.P./Bihar folks helps them to go to any place in India without fear and make a living. They are very strong mentally and do not bother about emotions.

    Now, Mr.Ankur Kumar behaved overtly with malicious intent. Will Bajpe police ensure the fundamental rights of Malaysian student ?

    Women are abused and raped across India and this article describes a shocking incident that occurred on the Bangalore-Mangalore Jet Airways flight on Tuesday January 28. For example, newspapers in Germany like Die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Die Süddeutsche Zeitung, reported on the incident in Subalpur village in West Bengal and on a 16-year-old girl who set herself on fire. She died from her injuries on New Year´s Eve eight days after the second attack.
    The 16-year-old girl was attacked and raped by six men in October 2013. After reporting it to the police, the same men raped her again.
    Law enforcement officials in India have a history of not taking reports of rape very seriously, failing to thoroughly investigate more than half of all rape cases reported to them according to Indian newspapers.
    For example, one of the top ranked police officials in India, Ranjit Sinha, said the following, “if you can´t prevent rape, you should enjoy it.”
    While this statement may have been careless on Mr. Sinha´s part, it shows that certain beliefs regarding women and rape are largely internalized.
    From a human rights perspective, this statement is outrageous, degrading and deeply concerning. It implies that women are not victims of rape they should simply adopt a new attitude and the whole problem will respectively blow over. But women certainly are victims of rape, particularly in India, where one rape is said to occur every 20 minutes. The gang rape and resulting death of a New Delhi student activated a similar outrage through India and the world. Directly following this case, the Indian government set up a commission to the law.
    Enforcing laws regarding rape is difficult because much of the problem comes from the internalization of attitudes such as misogyny, tradition and patriarchy. These ideals are set in stone from a very young age, beginning with ive abortion . In a society where men are valued above women, the roots of the issue run extremely deep.
    Many women do not want to appear in court, they are merely traumatized and shamed further through the experience. There is fear that speaking out will lead to ostracism by their communities or families, since rape is viewed as a loss of their honour. This perspective sheds immense light onto victim blaming. When a woman is raped, she is often viewed as being responsible for the rape herself. Many women are questioned in the courts about their whereabouts and if they have the protection of someone in public.
    After the Delhi gang raping, and the rape of the 16-year-old girl and the rape in Subalpur village, is it pretty clear that Indian law has only changed on paper. Laws and attitudes must change together in order for a true transformation to occur.

    Appreciate foreign girl's courage to report the incident.

    We have a tendency of misreading a female of foreign countries if she talks freely and/or smiles at the very first instance and that you would think the girl is 'chaalu' and easy target.

    But many of us do not know,the fact that their friendly interaction is, their culture, that they would talk and smile freely to anyone. We should not mistake them

    The above incident could have been occurred in the same way and the guy thought, good chance to brush his shoulders and hand with the co-passenger.

    If he is guilty, he deserves severe punishment.

He was a very arrogant and used to drink .The wife had no Chance to go against and beat her black and blue.This Girl why she didn't complain in flight is a mystery.and taxi nr.must have got from central when he first registered.

    I am the most experienced man in these matters. At least as far as this forum goes definitely.Here many ask me.O.K.? So a small discourse...
    'Proper dress' definition depends on an individuals taste. 'Scanty' for one might be 'fully' for the other and so on.Take Sunny Or Poonam...they always say they are properly dressed...Some say they leave nothing to the imagination ...Whose side to take? Tell me? It's easy to comment sitting at TVM and such places, but reality is something different. Deep research has to be done in such matters. In our times even if girls were fully dressed and all we used to fall for them...It happens in rare cases now also..What's your explanation?
    For me, if you ask personally..it was the 'Eyes' O.K.! See- different people have different tastes.Hope you all get the gist of what I want to say! The dress isn't everything. 'The way you carry yourself along with your 'dress' counts and counts immensely!

    I would like to correct you that 99.9% of molestation and rape cases are subjected to people who are fully clothed and not on naked or half clothed people like you state. It is in the mind-set of men he can rape or molest even a woman in a burqa. Children who are raped, would you tell them to dress properly or hold the man responsible who commits the crime?

    There are many doubts in this news.
    1) When she says she was sexually harassed what actually he did to her? There are so many people sitting around in the flight. The maximum he could do is touch her in a inappropriate way (intentionally or unintentionally).
    2. He left the airport in some taxi, so from where the airport officials got his contact number / taxi driver's number to call him back?
    3. Why he should be taken for medical examination?

    The exact location where she was sexually harassed is not mentioned.
    It could have been anywhere when waiting to disembark or whilst disembarking outside the plane\in the bus.. as such she complained to the Jet Airways ground staff.

    if he has harassed her he should be punished or if she has mistakenly complained, then after the interrogation the truth will be out and the girl should be punished.

    It is not a bus or train to open the door and run away.. If a girl senses something wrong, she can immediately report to the cabin crew, due action will be taken immediately from changing the seats to an emergency landing. Moreover, he would taken into custody even before he could come out of the airport. Nothing is easy these days, Everyone knows it very well...

    Hi Henry, why u so worried about the accused native place? When a Tamil group thieves u wrote "tamilnadu thambees" when a Punjabi does something "Punjab da puththar" what is the wrong with places, if a guy from Mangalore commits mistake it doesn't mean whole mangaloreans are like that. So be specific of the issue instead insulting a particular region. Culprits are there everywhere, irrespective of places. Bad luck to Indians females they are still not free to move even in the day times. Jai hind..
