Kundapur: Undertrial's suicide bid fails due to lack of water in well!

Kundapur, Jan 27: An undertrial from Mangalore escaped from police while being brought from the court on Monday January 27, and tried to commit suicide by jumping into a well.

However, his suicide bid failed as there was not enough water in the well, and he was caught again by the police.

Chandrashekar Poojary (36) from Kavoor in Mangalore, accused in several theft and robbery cases in Bhatkal, Udupi and Kundapur, was brought to Kundapur court on Monday January 27 along with four other accused.

After the hearing, the police along with the accused went to the canteen for tea. Chandrashekar seized the opportunity and escaped from the police. He ran towards a well located opposite to the court and jumped in.

However, as there was not enough water in the well, he sustained only minor injuries. Head constable Dinesh got him out of the well and shifted him to government hospital for treatment.

A case has been registered in Kundapur police station.

Chandrashekar was arrested in March 2013 for theft of a two-wheeler and sent to judicial custody.

    Convicts should understand they are under the custody of the courts but they have all the rights as a common citizen. Poor should also get equal benefits and parol or bail should be accessible.

    It was his duty to make sure there is enough water in the well before the jump. He could have chosen sea or river instead of well for suicide. He is a foolish and wasting everybody's time.

    In January itself the well is dry ! This is an indication of impending acute water scarcity in the region after March month.
    So, the Dist Administration should start taking remedial steps from now itself so that in the Summer people and animals don't have to face too much hardship due to acute water scarcity.

    The poor guy has no money, but wrong way of earning. If works in the fields, he will get at least plenty to eat and at least some money in the evening. Now he is feeling shy to show his face! Chi Nachike!

    This highlights the shortage of water in Udupi dist. How can someone know that there is no water in well in the month of Jan. at least the local panchyat or govt must dig new wells (not borewells where it is not possible for adults to commit suicide)
