OIC condemns violence in Central African Republic

Jeddah, Jan 26 (IANS/WAM): The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Sunday condemned the recent escalation of violence in the Central African Republic and the reported mass murder of civilians.

"The resulting massive displacement of people - internally and across borders - has deepened the already grave humanitarian crisis in the region," OIC Secretary-General Iyad Ameen Madani said.

He expressed hope that the election of Catherine Samba-Panza by the Central African Republic's parliament as interim president would lead to peace and stability in the country.

Madani urged all parties to put an end to the violence, cooperate with the head of the transitional government to facilitate delivery of humanitarian assistance, and live up to their African heritage and tradition of tolerance and to the true spirit of forgiveness in both Christianity and Islam.
