Mangalore: Dr Ahmed Fazal receives Scientist of the Year Award

Mangalore, Jan 24: Dr Ahmed Abdul Fazal from Mangalore has been conferred the prestigious Scientist of the Year Award-2013 instituted by the National Environmental Science Academy, New Delhi.
Dr Fazal did his PhD in the year 1994 from University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore and post-doctoral higher training on molecular biology at CIFE (deemed University of Fisheries), Mumbai. Presently he is a professor at University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore.
In an career spanning 28 years, he has worked in different agricultural universities such as UAS, Bangalore, Karnataka, RAU, Bihar, UAS, Dharwad and UAS, Raichur, serving in teaching, research, extension and research administration.
Fish meat processing being his special area of research, Dr Fazal has significantly contributed to the field of processing technology. He did research on bio-chemical changes in different fishes during frozen storage, cryoprotectants on minced meat of different fishes during frozen storage, development of value added products from underutilized fishes, biotoxins from aquatic animals etc.
Dr Fazal is the recipient of JRF from ICAR, New Delhi. He earned graduate assistantship from UAS, Bangalore; and was given the best paper presentation award from Karnataka University, Dharwad and certificate of appreciation from RJAS, Srinagar. He has published more than 39 research articles in reputed national and international journals, symposia and conferences. He has been handling research projects, has developed four new technologies, attended 23 conferences, symposia and workshops and is member of 5 professional/scientific bodies. His work has taken him to countries such as the Sultanate of Oman, Saudi Arabia, Nepal and Bangladesh.
Dr Fazal is a resident of Kankanady. His wife is a lecturer in a college in Mangalore. Their son works for an MNC in Bangalore and daughter is pursuing chemical engineering.
