Mangalore: Gas tanker rams into lorry on highway near Farangipet

Mangalore, Jan 23: An HPCL gas tanker collided with a sand-laden lorry on the highway near Farangipet here Thursday January 23.


The gas tanker plying from Mangalore collided with the lorry which was moving in the same direction on Mangalore-Bangalore national highway.

Sources said that the gas tanker rammed into the lorry from the rear end, as the lorry driver applied sudden brakes in the middle of the road.

Gas tanker driver Mariyappan (53) was injured in the accident. He was rushed to a private hospital.

Fire personnel also arrived at the spot.

The traffic was affected for sometime due to the accident. Mangalore rural police who arrived at the scene managed to restore the traffic.

    It is very clear that nobody follows lane rules. This tanker was supposed to be on the left side since it is a slow moving vehicle. But these tanker drivers never care about others and their lives and create problems by blocking the road all the way. They need to b at least conscious about the rules when safety is concerned.

    These heavy drivers should be taught the basic safety rule of keeping sufficient distance from the vehicle in front to avoid such sudden collisions which could lead to catastrophic incidents to the fuel tank exploding or catching fire!! Moreover the Mangalore BC road, though nicely done, is used recklessly by old people, women, and children, and even cattle roaming around and wrong side driving!! A separate service road should have been built, including underground pathways to cross!! As the population increases such incidents will be on the rise unless the authorities wake up from their deep sleep!!

    Clearly shows the mistake of the gas tanker driver, since he is supposed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in the front. In spite of so many tragic accidents involving the gas tankers, one of which is the unforgettable Perne incident, the authorities have never woken up yet. Although there is a order barring these tankers plying during the night, no one is bothered. I guess there is no night shift in the RTO or the police department. Is this a big disaster waiting to happen???
