Mangalore, Jan 18: Loss suffered in betting is said to be the reason behind the suspected suicide of Shailesh Shetty (27), a resident of Kavoor, whose body was found at Sultan Battery here on Friday, January 17.
Sources said that Shailesh was working for a private chit fund firm and was keen on cricket betting. He eventually borrowed money from others when he suffered loss in betting.
It is learnt that betting is actively taking place in the Kavoor area, and is popular among the youth. A year ago, another person identified as Nithin too reportedly committed suicide after he was trapped in the debts caused by betting.
According to family sources, Shailesh left home in the evening on Thursday, January 16, but never returned. He had left his mobile phone and wallet back in his house. Accordingly, the family had registered a police complaint too.
On Friday evening, the bike belonging to Shailesh and his footwear were found close to NMPT guest house, near Tannir Bavi and the body was later found at Sultan Battery.
