Mumbai, May 14: Police on Saturday used batons to disperse a group of medical students who blocked roads at busy Walkeshwar in south Mumbai to protest against government’s proposal for reservation in institutions of higher learning.

However, no one was injured in the baton charge, police claimed. About 90 medical students were detained after they blocked vehicular traffic on the Walkeshwar road that leads to Raj Bhavan and Varsha, the house of Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

While police claimed that students had been trying to gain entry into Raj Bhavan and had been, therefore, detained for unlawful assembly, the junior medical students said they had been staging a "peaceful rasta-roko" to lodge their protest against reservation.
