Mangalore: Mithun Rai elected district Youth Congress president amid chaos

Mangalore, Jan 11: Mithun Rai was chosen the president of district Youth Congress once again, in an election that saw Youth Congress members erupt into a fight soon after the declaration of results. The election was held on Friday January 10.
Eight candidates had stood for election and Mithun Rai won the maximum number of 534 votes. Luqman garnered 252 votes, Nemiraj Shetty 185, Devikiran 100, Umar Farooq 85, Srihari 54, Bhoomi Ramachandra 42 and Mohammed Sadiq secured 33 votes.
A fight erupted between the winners and losers soon after the counting of votes. It is said that a vehicle hit one of the members while reversing and caused the fight, and sources said that the fight erupted between candidate Ramananda's supporters and another group. Police brought the situation under control.
Four candidates who secured the maximum number of votes will get the positions of vice-president and secretaries.
The election for unit committee president for assembly constituencies was also held. Girish Alva was elected from Mangalore north, Chandrahasa from Moodbidri, Merryl Rego from Mangalore south, Mohammed Wahab from Sullia, Arshad from Puttur, Prashanth from Bantwal and Nazar from Mangalore got elected.
Later, Mithun Rai and his supporters celebrated his win by bursting crackers. He was taken on a victory procession in an open vehicle amidst much rejoicing.
