Mangalore: Shell out minimum Rs 25 for auto ride from Jan 15

Mangalore, Jan 11: Auto rickshaw passengers in the city will have to shell out a minimum charge of Rs 25 from January 15.

The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has revised the rates following a meeting with auto rickshaw drivers and owners held last week. The new rates will be in effect from January 15. Currently, the minimum charge is Rs 20.

As per the revision, the minimum charge is fixed at Rs 25 for the first 1.5 km (maximum three passengers), after which every kilometre will be charged Rs 14.

There will be no waiting charge for the first 15 minutes, but thereafter 45 minutes of waiting will cost Rs 25. Luggage weighing 20 kg will be free, but additional weight will be charged at Rs 2 per kg.

During the night, between 10 pm and 5 am the auto driver can charge the passenger up to 1.5 times the meter fare.

The RTA has directed the auto drivers to display the revised rates prominently in their autos for the benefit of passengers.

Auto drivers holding permit to operate within MCC limits can charge up to 1.5 times more when asked to commute to rural areas or outside the MCC limits.

All the auto rickshaws in the district have to compulsorily install fare meters or digital meters. The auto drivers and owners have been given a deadline of 30 days to upgrade their meters as per the new revision. Auto drivers who do not follow rules or charge more than the stipulated rates will face strict action, including cancellation of their permits, the RTA said.

    I think it's fare. Living costs in Mangalore are very high. How do you expect auto drivers to live? Should all Mangaloreans send a cousin to Dubai so they can live like kings at home? Or you want auto drivers to be poor and destitute like in Mumbai?

    Kindly specify the MCC limits. Auto rickshaw drivers charge more than the normal meter rate to come to Kulshekar.

    This is a sorry state. Appears RTO scum bed to the pressure from Rickshaw Union. Mangalore rates are way above the prevailing mega city Mumbai rates, where the minimum is Just Rd.15/-. Daiji world can prepare a comparison of rates in various cities and place them in front of the public. Using Gandhi's satyagraha the commuters should boycott travel. But we do not have alternate commuting system unplaced for our city buses their drivers and conductors are horrible.

    It's hardly been 3 months since I moved out of M'lore and the minimum fare has increased to 25. Wonder how much will the rate be when i visit after a year. #25isjusttoomuch

    Gift of Congress led UPA, to common man..!... Repeated hike in fuel price..inadequate supply of LPG..linking of Adhar..pay extra for Gas if there is no Adhar Card.

    Height of wrong administration be it MCC or State or Centre. Think before you vote in comming LS.

    They will refuse to come to any location which is not on main road thinking they won't get customers from there.Authorities should set up a rule that rickshaw drivers have to pay a compensation of 100 rs to the passenger if they want to refuse trip and a board to the effect should be displayed in all auto stands.

    Ridiculous rates. And the attitudes of the rick guys also. Its not that they wil take us where we need to go . Its like if they happen or want to go in that way they say yes, otherwise they say sorry anvhi povond ulle. Which angers us because in emergency cases also it has happened . But not all are arrogant some are kind and polite too. A number must be provided to complain against them if they are rude and creating problems for the customers.

    This hike is too much granted on the basis of hike in LPG as not all autos run on LPG!! Moreover, such high rates are not even prevalent in the financial capital, Mumbai!! Added to this most of the auto drivers act like goons and work according to their whims and fancies!! Charging double starts right after sunset and not 10 PM!! Aam aadmi already burdened with the sky high inflation will now have to think auto rides as luxury rides!! Jai Ho!!!

    Sad day for passengers again. Does the RTA know as to how many auto runs on a different kind of fuel? Have all kinds of fuel gone up by 25% from the last increase in auto fare?

    Why is this jump in price of almost 25%? Is it the change (coins) worry coming in the way of a less increase in price? If the Auto fare has to go up let also the rule of introducing the Rishaw Driver Identity Display Card behind their seat come into force together.

    Why only the fare increase and the rule of new ID display postponed or cancelled?

    ITS TIME FOR THE PEOPLE TO DECIDE SOON AS THERE IS ONLY 5 DAYS LEFT......

    Inspite of hike these rickshaw drivers make so much natak when u approach them.Outside city center around at 8:30pm and kankanady junction at 6:30am also they will charge 1.5 times.(Their talk of course is very rude)Please provide a complaint email id or contact no.Thank you

    This increase is bound to happen when the cost of fuel,petrol and gas is on the increase.The general public has to cooperate for this hike becuse these rates are fixed scientifically after lot of deliberations.Thanq.

    Why is a uniform policy not followed throughout the country? I wish to know how
    many autos in Mangalore run on LPG? Seriously introspect on the claims of
    these auto drivers. The internet gives auto fares of many cities which I have
    studied. No where have I seen such rates as demanded by the Mangalorean drivers.
    It begs me to think of the nexus between them and the Chairman and DC. Is it a
    political ploy? As stated, the drivers go where they want to and not where you
    wish. They refuse to go to places close by from the railway station and bus
    depots. On threatening them of reporting to the police, they laugh it off. Isn't there something that the common man can do to stave off these blood suckers?
    I am sure that every mangalorean has a sad and bad story to tell about the behaviour of the drivers. It's true that there are gems (and as you know very rare)among their tribe. Why don't organisations condemn this hike by taking out public marches? Does the common man always have to bow down to the arm twisting tactics of these auto drivers?

    The 25% hike, from Rs. 20 to Rs. 25, is indeed killing and unfair. If I am not mistaken, in year 2013 there were two hikes. Looks like Rikshaw drivers get what they wish.

    The recent plan to introduce the Rishaw Driver Identity Display Card behind their seat has now been held back or just cancelled, citing the flimsy reasons by their Union.

    No one to listen to the ordinary passengers who are subject to arrogance and rude behaviour of most Rikshaw drivers.

    Wish a strong rule is in place to discipline these errant guys.

    There was a time STD booths were essential part of the life in Mangalore. I am after few years Rikshaws will also face the similar fate like that of the STD booths as people ditch the rickshaws.
