Mangalore, Jan 9: It is a fact that the advent of modern cars and other transport systems have relegated the bicycle to being an unsafe and impractical means of daily transport, and in a country like India, given the rush and utter neglect of traffic and safety rules, the thought of bicycles as a preferred choice seems something of a nightmare for most.
But we look at other countries like the UK, the USA and the Netherlands, there are rules to be followed while riding, and these rules are respected by the citizens. In most cities in the developed world, there are separate lanes for cyclists which doubly ensures their safety and encourages cycling.
Now, an Austrian cyclist is on a mission to promote this activity in several countries, and recently he was in Mangalore.
His name is Klaus. A talented, tall and handsome cyclist who loves to ride, listen to music especially rock, electronic, country songs
(Austrian). His hobbies include skiing, trekking and playing volleyball.
The moment I saw him, I thought he might be in his late 30's, given the immense task he has taken upon himself. But no, he is just 23!
Klaus has 'KTM Life' bicycle. Some of the best features of this bike (bicycle) include high quality accessories and the 21 speed gear system in combination with the variable power Egstone motor. It is recommended to copy the light system which is powered by the battery. However, because of certain legislation, the bikes are also equipped with a Dynamo light system as well. Klaus carries his huge bags, and equipment on his cycle.
When I interviewed Klaus, my first question was 'Why this cycle expedition?' The answer he gave was beautiful. He is a true nature admirer.
He said, "I was inspired by a rider. His hard work, skills, efforts and passion for riding the bicycle truly amazed me. I took up this task to understand people. If we go on a trip in a huge vehicle, we cannot go into the small lanes where people are eager to meet us. I want to listen to them, I want to feel things, understand things and want to see things that people do in various countries. That is why I chose to cycle."
"I have learnt their culture, lifestyle, survival skills and much more. I have many places to explore," he adds, his eyes twinkling with enthusiasm.
It is truly a point to ponder over. While most people of our region hardly care for our own nature or culture, Klaus, being from a far away land wants to explore our country.
Kluas is a mechanical engineer by profession. He has worked in a company called 'Aerospace' for three years. But even as he worked, he had this urge to take leave from the company and go on a long journey. And that is what he did. He quit his job.
Klaus began his cycling journey from Austria on July 27, 2013. He has travelled in various countries like Greece, Turkey, Iran, Oman, Muscat, Dubai and currently he is in India where he has been to Trivandrum and now Mangalore, almost covering more than 6,500 kilometers. From Mangalore he planned to proceeed to Goa, North India and to Nepal.
In Mangalore, he stayed for a couple of days with Shenoy family. Waxing eloquent about Indian cuisine, Klaus says he is in love with 'parota and fish curry'.
"Indian food is very delicious. Every person from every country loves Indian food," he adds.
The Shenoy family met Klaus in Dubai where Shenoy's family friends were also into riding cycles. Klaus was informed that Shenoys are coming to India and he came along with them.
When asked about the Indian traffic, his expression changed. He said, "It is hectic. Riders go on the wrong side and nobody cares."
Here's wishing all the very best to Klaus in completing his remarkable journey.
