Mangalore: Police arrest two women thieves, seize gold worth Rs 2.5 lac

Mangalore, Jan 7: Pandeshwar police on Monday January 6 arrested two women thieves for looting gold ornaments from houses and from passengers in buses, and recovered gold worth Rs 2.5 lac from them.
The accused have been identified as Maheshwari (32) and Nagu (22) from Karur district, Tamil Nadu. Nagu is the mother of a small child.
The police said that the two women were spotted moving about in a suspicious manner at Old Kent road. The police took them into custody and during interrogation, it came to light that they were involved in two theft cases at Shivanagar and Derebail.
On November 6, the duo had broken into the house of Irene D'Souza of Shivanagar. Irene had left from her house after locking the front door. The accused women broke the lock of the back door and looted the house in broad daylight.
On November 27, the two women snatched a gold chain from Derebail's Pauline Maryappa, an officer in the crime branch in police commissioner's office. Pauline was on her way to the office by city bus, when the accused snatched her gold mangalsutra worth Rs 1.7 lac.
The accused had put the stolen gold in a plastic cover and hidden it among the bushes near a railway track. The police recovered the stolen items consisting of a gold mangalsutra, a chain, a necklace, two finger rings, a pair of earrings and a bracelet.
Nagu and Maheshwari were living in a tent near the railway station and would commit thefts usually in the early mornings. They would target houses that were locked, and sometimes don burka and loot passengers in buses, said the police.
The investigation was led by ASP Pawan Nejoor. Pandeshwar police inspector Dinakar Shetty, crime branch PSI S S Meti, Vishwanath, Keshava, Gangadhar, Damodar, Shaju K Nayar, Prakash, Jayaprakash, and Vijaygeeta were part of the arrest operation.
Investigation is on to determine whether the accused were involved in other theft cases.
