Udupi: Students from Pennsylvania University visit farm at Katpady

Udupi, Jan 5: The eggplant farm at Katpady here had a unique set of visitors on Saturday January 4. A team of students from University of Pennsylvania, USA were seen at the farm busy learning more about agriculture and farming techniques followed here.
The students of the private university which engages primarily in research have come to India as part of study programmes relating to women’s empowerment through Navodaya self-help groups.
The team consisting of twenty people will hold detailed study on the programmes of the self-help group including distribution of loans, encouragement to farming and agriculture and so on.
The team has studied processing of dry fish, its distribution and cultivation of eggplants. The professors of Nitte University have given demonstration to the team. The team has been staying near the seashore for the last four days.
The team members said that there are no self-help groups or programmes of distribution of loans for people’s welfare in America. They opined that the programmes of Navodaya self-help group are an example to others.
Padmanabha, nodel officer of Navodaya group, manager Chandrashekar, promoter Vimala Dayananda and Katpadi agricultural cooperative bank official Ravi Kumar were present.
