Udupi: Injured leopard caught in trap at Hiriadka, dies

Udupi, Jan 2: A leopard lost its life hours after it walked into a trap near Mahalingeshwara Temple at Kudi village, Kondadi in Hiriadka here on Thursday January 2.

The animal may have strayed into the area during the night and caught in a trap laid for another animal, sources said.

Locals who passed by the spot saw the leopard struggling and informed the forest officials.

The officials who arrived at the spot administered a transquiliser to calm down the wild animal. It was then taken to veterinary clinic in Hiriadka.

It is said that the leopard was injured especially in the lung area, but as no expert is available in Udupi, veterinarians had to be called from Pilikula Nisargadhama, Mangalore.

However, by the time the experts arrived, the animal breathed its last.

The carcass was later buried at Panchanabettu.

The locals said that of late, there have been several incidents of domestic dogs going missing, and expressed suspicion that this leopard might have taken them away.

    How come a place like Udupi that is surrounded by forests not have an expert veterinarian . Its just speaks of how callous our ministers are and how insensitive we are towards our forests and wildlife .

    Strict conservation and over population is the result of this. Each grown up animal requires a certain amount of area for its habitat and prey.hen this is lost the animals venture into human habitat / villages.Conservationists in Africa cull wild animals to maintain an env. balance.This is not done in India and that's why we often see this menace.

    Since the tiger had major injury the survival was doubtful and now the locals may relax and free a bit from the fear of this wild animal.Thanq.

    Sad to see a beautiful animal down.
    Wild animals are no were wrong , its we human get into there habitat and build our boundaries and say this is our place.
    Punish all .
    1. Who placed the trap.
    2. Person who converted forest land to residential purpose.
    3.officer who snatched the land from dead animal.
    Many more....

    Animals have lost their habitat which has been converted into concrete jungles.Construction is going on and on with no respite seen. It is time habitats are built and these animals are sheltered giving them their place that man has usurped.
