Srinagar, May 5: Protests in Srinagar over alleged police inaction against persons involved in a sex scandal turned violent on Friday as a large mob demolished the house of the alleged kingpin of the racket.

Nearly 2,000 persons gathered outside the home of alleged kingpin Sabeena at Habbakadal in the downtown area and began tearing it down. Household items were thrown on the streets and burnt. Sabeena and four others were been arrested in the case.

Massive demonstrations had marked the daylong strike called by political and non-political organisations against what they called the inaction of police against political and police bigwigs allegedly involved in the scandal, officials said.

Most of the demonstrations staged by angry residents and separatist organisations, including Muslim League and Democratic Liberation Party, ended peacefully, with people urging the government to identify those involved in the racket and to punish them.

Despite heavy police presence at Habbakadal, the mob had demolished Sabeena’s house without any resistance as emotions among the residents were running high, they added.

Infuriated by allegations against Sabeena, the people have over the past week made several attempts at damaging or setting fire to the house that she had bought some time ago.

Protestors alleged that even after the passage of nearly two months since the scandal became public, police had not taken any action against persons named by two girls who claimed to have been lured into the racket by Sabeena and some surrendered militants.
