Cricket match at Moodbidri ends in stabbing of player

Mangalore, Dec 29: In a startling incident reported at Thodar, Moodbidri on Sunday December 29, a fight broke out between two teams playing a cricket match and ended in the stabbing of a player in the eye.

The incident occured at a playground in front of Tenkamijar anganwady in Thodar.

A cricket tournament began on Saturday December 28 evening at the playground, and a match was scheduled for Sunday morning between teams from Puttige and Jokatte. During their match, a quarrel arose between the two teams over a run and soon it snowballed into a fight. In the heat of the moment, Salim of Jokatte team brandished a knife and stabbed Handelu's Samshuddin in the eye.

That's not all. When the locals tried to catch hold of Salim, he took to his heels, and eyewitnesses said that he threatened the driver of a bus plying towards Mangalore by brandishing his knife and escaped in the bus.

Samshuddin was grievously injured and admitted to a private hospital.

Moodibidri police arrived at the spot and vacated the playground.

Haneef, a local, said that cricket tournaments have been held at the playground since many years but this was the first time such an incident had taken place. He lamented that a tournament that was organized to foster friendship had ended in a gruesome fight.

    This is really insulting to the spirit of cricket which is called a gentleman's game.Stabbing and other criminal acts in games is highly objectionable.Hope the local organisers will sort out this problem at the earliest and not give any scope to reccur again.Thanq.

    Sir, you don't get the point well what he said.He was asking whether Mr.Rajesh knows only the bad condition of Afghanistan but not African countries.Because some of the African countries too having such problems.

    I don't think this (future rowdy?)Saleem's intention was to play a cricket match but he might have a problem with the victim so he used this opportunity to have revenge on him.

    Police should treat him in the right manner in the bud otherwise no doubt he will be a real goon in the future.

    All people do not know how to enjoy the game. Its an emotion and rough game. Police required when taporis play cricket. They should sign before playing never fight, just obey umpire's decision, etc. Hope here no rules, just jungly game.

    I had seen one village cricket match where one of the bowlers went to toddy shop (near the ground) and had two full bottles (toddy).When I asked him how could you bowl if you took liquor ? He said " I want to bowl fast,so I need energy "..Match started, this SPIRITED bowler appealed for LBW against opening batsman..When the umpire turned down his appeal..He started arguing and shouted "R**de Mage,OUT korumbe"..No need to narrate what happened afterwards..
    Here,the player brought knife with him to play cricket !!! Pre planned.?MATCH FIXING..

    Salim might have come to the match with the pre-intention of some kind of attack. Why is he carrying around knife for a cricket match otherwise ? is it Afghanistan or Dakshin Kannada ?

    Cricket, when played with good sportsman spirit, is an excellent tool to bring communities together. But, when played with only passion of winning, then the real trouble starts. One must remember, a silly fight like this created a criminal in the name of Mulki Rafeeq, who was encountered.
    He was a hardworking fisherman with a passion for cricket.

    i will call them fools as sports are played with sportsman spirit and i believe sports is not for everybody,aggressiveness is normal in sports but the answer should be by showing real talent..... Not fighting like "gundas"

    Cricket matches at Moodabidri were always MONEY spinners for organizers as they resort to forced collection of Sponsorship from Shopkeepers.
    Where there is money, there you will find dishonest people, and where there are dishonest people there you will find petty politics, which ultimately spoils sportsmanship and results in fights over trivial issues.
