Cricket match at Moodbidri ends in stabbing of player

Mangalore, Dec 29: In a startling incident reported at Thodar, Moodbidri on Sunday December 29, a fight broke out between two teams playing a cricket match and ended in the stabbing of a player in the eye.
The incident occured at a playground in front of Tenkamijar anganwady in Thodar.
A cricket tournament began on Saturday December 28 evening at the playground, and a match was scheduled for Sunday morning between teams from Puttige and Jokatte. During their match, a quarrel arose between the two teams over a run and soon it snowballed into a fight. In the heat of the moment, Salim of Jokatte team brandished a knife and stabbed Handelu's Samshuddin in the eye.
That's not all. When the locals tried to catch hold of Salim, he took to his heels, and eyewitnesses said that he threatened the driver of a bus plying towards Mangalore by brandishing his knife and escaped in the bus.
Samshuddin was grievously injured and admitted to a private hospital.
Moodibidri police arrived at the spot and vacated the playground.
Haneef, a local, said that cricket tournaments have been held at the playground since many years but this was the first time such an incident had taken place. He lamented that a tournament that was organized to foster friendship had ended in a gruesome fight.
