Cops to file chargesheet in Nigerian case in January

Mapusa, Dec 29 (TNN): The chargesheet in the sensational Nigerian murder case is likely to be filed in the second week of January 2014, police sources said on Saturday.

Nigerian national Obado Uzoma Simeon was found murdered at Parra, a hub for Nigerians in Goa, on October 31, in a suspected gang war over drug territories. The death case went on to become an international issue.

Sources said that according to existing rules, the maximum time limit within which a chargesheet can be filed is 90 days after the arrest. The first arrest in connection with the murder was that of Arpora resident Surendra Pol on November 6. The main suspect Omkar Palyekar was arrested on November 19.

Police have so far arrested nine suspects while four are still on the run. These are Runal Palyekar, Gaurish Govekar, Pranesh Divkar and Sitaram Gaonkar. If they fail to report to the police before the chargesheet is filed they will be declared absconders and their assets may be seized, said sources. All the arrested persons are presently out on bail.

Following Simeon's murder, over 50 Nigerians had paralyzed the national highway 17 at Porvorim for most part of the day, demanding the immediate arrest of the assailants.
