Mangalore: Jokatte youth among three killed as Saudi oil platform sinks

Mangalore, Dec 29: A youth from Jokatte here met a tragic end when the offshore oil rig of Saudi Arabia's state-run petroleum giant Aramco sank in the Persian Gulf on Friday December 27. He was among the two Indians and a Bangladeshi who died in the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Dawood Hakim (27), son of Abdul Khader, a resident of Porkodi, Jokatte.
Aramco had earlier said the two Indian and a Bangladeshi workers were missing following the accident in the waters off the coast of al-Safaniya region, the site of the world's largest offshore oil field. The remaining 24 crew suffered "limited injuries" but were rescued, Aramco said. The platform was carrying out maintenance work at an oil well in al-Safaniya in Eastern Province, 265 km north of the city of Dhahran, when the accident took place.
The family members of Hakim were informed of his death on Saturday December 28.
Sources said that he was taking a break in the rest room when the oil platform sank.
Hakim was the youngest among the nine children of Abdul Khader. He went abroad for work two years ago and was scheduled to come home on vacation in January.
