Bantwal: Campco founder Varanashi Subraya Bhat no more

Bantwal, Dec 27: Varanashi Subraya Bhat, the founding father of Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd (Campco) passed away at his residence in Adyanadka here on Friday December 27. He was 86.
Subraya Bhat had been ailing for sometime. He leaves behind two sons and two daughters.
Born in an agriculturist family, he established Campco in the early 70s when the prices of arecanut had crashed. He was instrumental in bringing together areca growers of Karnataka and Kerala and the cooperative eventually succeeded in boosting the areca market. He served as Campo president till 1990.
Apart from his pioneering efforts to uplift the areca growers, he also developed Punacha village by building roads and bridges. His contribution education sector includes starting of two news schools and upgrading some others. He was also the founder secretary of Adyanadka Educational Society.
He has also served as president of South Kanara Agriculturists Co-operative Marketing Society.
For his contribution to the cooperative sector, he was honoured with the prestigious 'Sahakari Ratna' award by the state government in 2002, the 'Sahakarita Ratna' award by IFFCO in 2005 and a number of other recognitions.
