Kundapur, Dec 27: Contrasting statements have been emerging about the alleged attack by miscreants on several girls participating in an NSS camp at Vaddarse on Wednesday December 25 night. While some claimed it was nothing more than a 'panic attack' that gripped the girls for no apparent reason, others said some sort of a harmless chemical or beer was sprayed on them.
The locals say that the female students at the NSS camp of Barkur government degree college got scared due to the attempted attack by hooligans on Wednesday night and fell ill. Though it is still not clear how the attack took place, preliminary investigation has revealed that the sudden shock of the incident made the students ill.
The NSS camp was held from December 21 to December 27. Forty-eight female students and forty six male students had participated in it. The cultural programme held at the temple hall had concluded on Wednesday night. The female students had their dinner and were going towards the school where they stayed, which is about 250 meters away from the temple. They were walking in a line when a group of men reportedly tried to attack them.
More than 25 students are said to have fallen ill due to the incident and they were admitted to Kota government hospital and a private hospital at Koteshwara. The police have said that all of them were discharged from the hospital on Thursday. The police have found a few beer bottles in the vicinity of the school confirming that the place is plagued by miscreants.
SP Dr M B Boralingaiah and DySP Dr Prabhudev B Mane, Brahmavar circle inspector Arun B Naik and Kota SI K R Nayak visited the students at the hospital and gathered information. MP Jayaprakash Hegde also visited them.
Some have said that chloroform was used to kidnap the female students while others have said that beer was thrown on them. However the doctors have not confirmed either. The police have ruled out chloroform saying that there are no indications to substantiate those claims.
While some students have said that miscreants were four to five in number, others have said that they were masked. Some have said that the students screamed after some of the girls grew frightened for no real reason. It is still not known what actually transpired in the dark. The police are not able to find witnesses to ascertain that an attack by miscreants had indeed taken place. The question still remains whether the students fell ill due to some morbid fear.
