Ankola: BJP leader-businessman shot dead by four assailants

Ankola, Dec 21: A local BJP leader and mining businessman was shot dead by four assailants near Ankola bus stand on Saturday December 21. One of the four assailants was gunned down by his security.
The deceased, R N Naik, was shot at as he got into his car after coming out of his office near the bus stand and the bullet broke through the windshield and pierced his heart.
Naik's private gunman retaliated and fired at the assailants, one of whom was killed and another was captured with the help of the crowd that gathered at the spot. Two others managed to escape.
Naik was pronounced dead when brought to hospital. His gunman was also wounded in the shootout, police said.
Sources said that among the four assailants, two were from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, and two from Karnataka. Police suspect underworld don Ravi Poojary's hand in the incident.
SP R Dileep, Bhatkal ASP Sudheer Kumar Reddy and other police officials arrived at the spot. A hunt for the other two assailants is on. Sources said that the car used by the assailants has been traced.
Following the incident, tension prevailed in the are and shops were closed. Security has been tightened.
