Sumitha had reportedly consumed nearly 100 tablets with an intention to kill herself. She was rushed to a private hospital where she breathed her last on Tuesday after battling for life for a week in the intensive care unit (ICU).
Sumitha had attempted suicide on an earlier occasion too, said sources, but the attempt was foiled. A close friend of Sumitha told daijiworld in an email that Sumithra had always complained about her husband who was allegedly torturing her mentally and physically.
Sumitha's statement to police in ICU
Sumitha, while in the ICU for a week, narrated to the police how her husband and in-laws had continuously harassed and tortured her throughout her six months of married life.
Her brother Mohan said, “When we got her married to Sunil, we were fooled into believing that he had no bad habits. But later we realized that he was addicted to alcohol and had a lot of other bad habits too. Worse, Sunil would get his friends to his house and party till late night, and his wife was forced to stay awake till midnight only to serve them. Sumitha had also told the police about the continuous harassment for an additional dowry of Rs one lac."
Her last days
“We got her married spending Rs 16 lac and gave at least 20 sovereigns of gold. Whenever there was a quarrel between the husband and Sumitha, we went there and settled the issue. All that we hoped for was that they would be on good terms soon. It was only when she came home on December 9 that we realised how much her husband and in-laws had tortured and harassed her. There was no gold on her neck except the mangalasuthra. Sunil had mortgaged all the gold given to Sumithra," her brother Mohan alleged.
He further said, “Sumitha had brought lot of tablets which we did not know of. On December 9 night, while we slept, Sumitha consumed all the tablets. At midnight, she cried for help as she could not bear the pain, and we rushed her to the hospital where, three days later, she told us and the police about her miserable married life."
Two separate case have been registered against her husband and in-laws in Bantwal rural and Kankanady police stations.
Sources said that Sunil, his parents and sister are absconding.
