Oscar-winning actress Joan Fontaine dead


Los Angeles, Dec 16 (IANS): Hollywood actress Joan Fontaine died at her home in Carmel, California. She was 96 and died of natural cause.

Fontaine passed away Dec 15, her assistant Susan Pfeiffer confirmed, reports hollywoodreporter.com.

In a career spanning over six decades, Fontaine has been part of movies like "Rebecca" (1940), "Suspicion" (1941), "Ivy" (1947), "September Affair" (1950), "Ivanhoe" (1952) and "Island in the Sun" (1957).

She received three Academy Awards nominations and won one of them for her role in Alfred Hitchcock's movie "Suspicion". She also starred in Hitchcock's 1940 film "Rebecca" that earned her one of the Oscar nominations.

Fontaine was also a licensed pilot, an accomplished interior decorator and a Cordon Bleu-level chef, who was married and divorced four times.

She was married to actor Brian Aherne (1939-1945), TV producer William Dozier (1946-1951), producer Collier Young (1952-1961) and journalist Alfred Wright Jr. (1964-1969). She had two children from her four marriages.
