Mangalore: MCC takes measures for a cleaner city, violators to be fined

Mangalore, Dec 10: Stepping up its efforts to clean up the city, the Mangalore City Corporation has decided to take stringent action against those who fail to follow rules regarding maintenance of cleanliness and hygeine in the city.
Briefing reporters here on the Karnataka Muncipal Corporations Act (Amendment) Act, 2013 at Mangalore City Corporation here on Tuesday December 10, MCC commissioner Ajith Hegde said that failure to follow the guidelines will result in penalties or even imprisonment.
As per schedule XIII of The Karnataka Muncipal Corporations Act (Amendment) Act, 2013, whomsoever is found littering, urinating, openly defecating or committing other acts of nuisance on road, bus stand, railway stations or any other public places in the limits of MCC will be imposed a penalty of Rs 100 for first offence, and Rs 200 each time the offence is repeated.
"Whomsoever fails to maintain proper solid waste management or violates the rules, as per section 262 of The Karnataka Muncipal Corporations Act (Amendment) Act,2013 he/she will be penalised Rs 500, and additional Rs 50 for each day the offence is repeated thereafter," he said.
"If the person commits the offence for a fifth time, the punishment will be imprisonment for a term which may extend to three months or Rs 1,000," he added.
Emphasis will also be laid on section 423 of the Act regarding regulations on laying any cable including optical fiber cables and failure to adhere to conditions will attract penalty, he said.
Hegde also said that fines were imposed on Mangala Nursing Home, Mangala Kidney Foundation, Santhathi Clinic, Yenepoya hospital and Arvind Motors for improper solid waste management, among which, Arvind Motors and Mangala Kidney Foundation have paid the fines.
This will be functioning from tomorrow, where as three B group officers are named to strengthen the laws and uphold the laws amended.
To maintain transparency in solid waste management, MCC has also established Vechile Tracking System through GPS, M Governance and SMS-based public grievance re-addrassal system.
Various initiatives have been taken to tackle malaria and dengue, including health checkup camps, blood testing etc. All hostel wardens were informed to take necessary steps to avoid spread of these diseases, he said.
MCC assistant commissioner Prameela, health inspector Manjayya Shetty, and environment engineer Madhu Manohar were present.
