Praveen Mahajan, the man who shot Pramod Mahajan, always preferred to be in the background and was never a public face. In his late 40s, Praveen was always a reclusive family member and would not participate in the family get-togethers of the Mahajans. Pramod's father Venkatesh Mahajan had five children including three sons.
The eldest is Pramod. Prakash the second brother is settled in Aurangabad and Praveen is the youngest. Pramod Mahajan also has two sisters. Pradnya who is married to former deputy chief minister of Maharashtra Gopinath Munde and another married sister Pratibha. Mahajan hails from Osmanabad district of Maharashtra. His oratory skill was so good that it impressed the BJP stalwarts in early 80s and he was given plum postings.
One of his biggest achievements was to forge a strong alliance with Shiv Sena in mid 1980s and that still continues. Though Mahajan grew leaps and bounds in politics to become a Union cabinet minister his siblings always kept a low profile. Praveen used to run a small construction business in the extended suburb of Mumbai in Thane and was constantly supported by Pramod Mahajan in his ventures.
In fact, Pramod was his father figure and always used to be in touch with him though he was a reclusive member of the family. On Saturday morning, when he met Pramod Mahajan at his plush Worli residence, he apparently got into tiff with him. In anger he fired three shots, one in the chest and two in stomach injuring Pramod Mahajan seriously. He did not even try to evade arrest and surrendered to the Worli police.
