The Hague, Nov 25 (IANS): The Netherlands is preparing for a world nuclear security summit in 2014, which aims to prevent nuclear material from falling into the hands of terrorists.

"There is a considerable amount of nuclear material present in the world. If that ends up in the wrong hands, the consequences would be incalculable," Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said.

According to Rutte, the summit, scheduled for March 24-25, has main goals of decreasing and securing the amount of nuclear material in the world, reports Xinhua.

He said four organisations, 53 countries and 5,000 delegates will come to The Hague for the summit.

But "it will be a difficult task to put all these countries on the same line", he added.

The Netherlands was chosen to hold the international conference as it is "a small but an important player in the field of nuclear energy", Rutte said.

The Hague is known as a host to many international organisations such as the International Court of Justice and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, among others.

The nuclear security summit, an initiative of US President Barack Obama, was held for the first time in Washington in 2010. The second summit took place in Seoul in 2012.
