Mangalore, Nov 17: The city's theatre enthusiasts were treated to an English musical play titled, ‘Who is She?’ scripted and directed by Prof Maria D’Costa (director of UXCEL). The play was staged at St Agnes College auditorium here on Saturday November 16.
Set in the streets of England, the play presented the challenges faced by a dark complexioned and poor girl in the society. The girl faces trouble by the police and the society who think she is a thief all because she is dark and poor. However, the girl is on a mission to help her family and find her lost sister. The musical play entertained the audience with dance and melodious songs too.
Later, presenting a critique on the play, author Giselle Mehta said, “The highlight of ‘colour bias’ in the play has historical significance. In the west, the differences in complexion, the black and white – racism – divided the country. Today, we even find matrimonial ads stressing ‘light complexion’ of bride or groom. However, the play tries to build the right values among the people. It is the internal character that matters and not external complexion."
The author further added, “Drama is a challenging form that holds the audience literally captive in an allotted time or space, and that is what the children did in their presentation.” She advised the cast of the play to enhance clarity of speech in the next presentation.
Entry fee for a noble cause
In a noble gesture, a sum of Rs 20,000, collected from entrance fee of 600 audiences – was handed over to Fr Prakash D’Souza of St Joseph’s College, Jeppu to financially support deserving students in their education.
Prof Maria D’Costa also said, “This is the second play of its kind. Earlier, a play on Ramayana was stages. Our next plan is to organize a programme where the seniors will walk the ramp. We will hold it in the month of January.”
