Male, Nov 16 (IANS): Abdulla Yameen was elected the Maldives' next president, Xinhua reported citing unofficial results Saturday.
With less than 10 ballot boxes remaining to be counted, Yameen, candidate of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the half brother of the country's former strongman, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, has taken an unassailable lead over former president Mohamed Nasheed in the second round of the presidential run-off.
According to the results published on media outlet Sun, Yameen forged ahead with 51.62 percent votes while Nasheed got 48.38 percent of votes.
