Two women officials held in Bihar over girl's pregnancy

Patna, Nov 14 (IANS): Police in Bihar Thursday detained two women officials of an after-care home in connection with the sexual abuse and pregnancy of a minor girl, officials said.

"Two women officials of an after-care home were detained and interrogated in this connection after a two-member team of the Bihar Women's Commission inquired into the case", said Muzaffarpur District Magistrate Anupam Kumar.

Kumar said strict action would be taken against the two detained women officials. He did not rule out their arrest soon.

The women's commission team met the girl and listened to her side of the story. The team then informed the district authorities, a police official said.

Arvind Pandey, inspector general for weaker sections, said the girl has alleged that she was sexually abused and pointed to the involvement of a woman warden and another woman official of the after-care home for children.

"She was found pregnant when a medical examination was conducted," he said.

Pandey said the girl had fled the after-care home Sep 19 and was traced by railway police in Darbhanga district. She was brought back to the after-care home Oct 25.

When she was brought before the Child Welfare Commission, she said she was sexually abused.

After the case came to light Wednesday, an official inquiry was ordered into it.
