New Delhi, April 6: Samajwadi Party, which has been at loggerheads with Congress, would field a candidate against Sonia Gandhi in the prestigious bypoll to Rae Bareli scheduled on May 8, 2006.
SP chief and UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh told reporters that his party has considerable strength in Rae Barelli having won four assembly segments of the Lok Sabha constituency as against only one by Congress.
Yadav said that his party enjoyed a sizeable support in the constituency for several years and even "Indira Gandhi had failed to weaken the party".
Replying to questions, he said that whatever base the Congress has was in Rae Bareli and Amethi while his party has sizeable support in all parts of the state.
"It is all a drama to say the Sonia has made a sacrifice. She targeted Samajwadi Party and became the target herself. She resigned as she was bound to be disqualified", he said.
