Udupi, Nov 12: A complaint has been lodged against Canara Bank alleging that the bank transferred an amount much more than what was mentioned in the cheque, causing a loss of nearly Rs 2 lac. It is also alleged that the cheque was stolen and tampered with.
Abu Dhabi based businessman Robert Saldanha had sent an NRI crossed cheque of Rs 18,000, dated September 18 and drawn on Canara Bank Shirva branch, to his mother Cecilia Saldanha who resides in Shirva. He had sent the cheque by post.
However, Cecilia did not receive the cheque and hence she made enquiries at Canara Bank.
It came to light that the cheque was stolen in the post office and given to encash in Vijay Bank Padubidri branch. The Vijaya Bank officials forwarded it to Canara Bank NRI branch at Court Road for further action. The Canara Bank then deposited the amount in the bank account of HD Films in Mumbai Vijaya Bank Bhayandar branch.
It is alleged that though Robert had sent a cheque of Rs 18,000, the amount drawn was Rs 1,80,000, which means that the cheque may have been tampered with by adding a '0', after it was stolen at the post office. However, the officials seemed to have overlooked the fact the amount mentioned in words was different from the one in numerals, and also, the beneficiary was not Cecilia but HD Films in Mumbai.
In this regard, Cecilia has filed a complaint in Udupi police station.
