Mangalore: Need to set up more educational institutions: Siddaramaiah

Mangalore, Nov 11: "Billawas do a lot of work for their community but they have very few educational institutions and hence they and all other communities should try to educate youngsters by setting up institutions. Providing education is the noblest work of all as it creates self-respect," said chief minister Siddaramaiah.
He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the ‘Guru Mandir’ built by Brahmashree Narayana Guru Samaj Seva Sangha at Karambaru in Bajpe here on Monday November 11.
The Samudaya Bhavan (Community Centre) was inaugurated by former union minister B Janardhan Poojary while urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake inaugurated the ‘Bhojan Griha’ (dining hall).
Sri Satyanandatirtha Swamiji of Shree Shivagiri Kshetra blessed the occasion and Vasanth Kumar Bangera, president of the Sangha presided.
District in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai, fisheries minister Abhayachandra Jain, MLA Vasanth Bangera, B A Mohideen, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Kota Srinivas Poojary, Jaya C Suvarna, Naveen Suvarna, MLA Mohiuddin Bava among others were the chief guests.
Chief minister Siddaramaih speaking further said Narayan Guru has contributed a lot to the society in order bring about social change. "Most of us believe in superstitions. All these beliefs direct people in the wrong way. Narayan Guru and several other great personalities were against superstitious beliefs," he said.
"If people of this district want to be politically strong then they should be united. We have been facing problems since long and to get rid of this, we need to be united," he said. He also asked people to be wary of those people who are against development.
"Our government has sanctioned funds for various projects to this district. Rules regarding Forms 9 and 11 which are creating problems in conversion, purchasing, selling of land have been relaxed, and so also the ruling on construction of house on 3 cents land," he said.
In his concluding remarks, he said the government will always help those who do not have anything. "Efforts will be made to bring about social justice," he added.
Former union minister B Janardhan Poojary in his address praised the chief minister for considering people of all religions as equals while implementing pro-people works and schemes. "Soon after he was elected the CM, Siddaramaiah did not visit any temple, church or mosque, instead he announced rice at Re 1 to the poor which is a great thing," Poojary said.
"The chief minister has also allotted funds for various works in this district, including funds to develop the birth place of Koti Chennaya at a cost of Rs 5 crore, to set up Narayana Guru study center at Mangalore University and so on. We will not forget people who have helped us," he added.
"The Shaadi Bhagya scheme implemented by the government for needy Muslim women is also a good work. He has also assured to extend it to all other communities. I also urge the CM to give reservations to even the Brahmin community, which no one has done so far," he said.
"The chief minister follows the principles of Narayana Guru by wiping tears of the poor. About Rs 25 crore compensation has been allotted by the government to arecanut farmers. We will not comment on other governments for not allotting money, but I request the chief minister to increase the compensation amount if possible," he said.
'Anti-Superstition Bill won't be presented in next Assembly session'
Speaking on the sidelines of the programme, the chief minister, to a question on the proposed Anti-Superstitions Bill, said, "So far no committee has been formed to discuss the Bill and hence it cannot be presented in the next Belgaum Assembly session."
On resurfacing of Naxal activities in the region, he said the government is committed to preventing Naxal activities and already the combing operation has started.
