Mangalore: Jeppu parish lifts Bendore Church centenary cricket trophy

Mangalore, Nov 10: As part of the centenary celebrations of St Sebastian Church, Bendore, an inter-parish cricket tournament was organised within the Mangalore diocese consisting of city and episcopal city varado.
The following parishes participated: Angelore, Bendore, Bejai, Bajal, Bondel, Cascia, Derebail, Jeppu, Kelarai, Kulur, Neermarga, Rasario, Tannirbavi, Valencia and Vamanjoor.
Addressing the gathering during the valedictory ceremony, Dr Christopher Pais, who was chief guest stressed on the importance of sports and said that in today's fast-paced life, one needs to take up sports as a recreation to relax as well as to keep oneself fit. He added that sports also help in improving one's level of concentration and in the holistic development of an individual.
Charted accountant Claude Gonsalves lauded the organizers and congratulated the parish on celebrating the centenary year. He also the appreciated the participating teams for their spirit.
Parish priest of St Sebastian Church Fr Antony Serrao also congratulated the teams, especially the winners.
Titus Noronha compered the programme. Convener of the cricket tournament Christopher D'Souza welcomed the gathering while Stephen Pinto proposed the vote of thanks.
The tournament kicked-off on October 27 and matches were held on Sundays, with the semi-final matches being Jeppu vs Angelore and Bendore vs Cascia.
The teams that reached the finals were Jeppu and Cascia, and after sweating it out on Sunday November 10, the final trophy was bagged by Jeppu.
Jeppu parish took home a hefty cash prize of Rs 55,555, while Cascia team, the runner-up received a cash prize of Rs 44,444.
Multiple awards were given to the best players:
Best Bowler: Arjun - Team Jeppu
Best Batsman: Deepak - Team Cascia
Man of the Match: Janjai - Team Jeppu
Man of the Series: Ajay - Team Jeppu
The entire tournament has been sponsored by NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist Errol John Samuel, managing partner, R S Realty Promotions.
Among those present were corporator Naveen D'Souza, assistant parish priest of St Sebastian Church Fr Paul Crasta, centenary cultural committee convener Oswald Pais, parish council vice-president Ronald Walder, Terence D'Souza, Austin Peres, Fr John Moras, Fr Michael Santhumayor and others.
