Mangalore: Cancer awareness programme held at Bendore Church

Mangalore, Nov 10: The Catholic Action League of St Sebastian Church, Bendore, in association with the Rotary Club of Mangalore - Sunrise and Ave Maria Palliative Care, organised a cancer awarness programme on Saturday November 9 at 6 pm in the Parish Hall of Bendore Church.
Rtn Dr Shivashankar Bhat, FRCS, professor of A J Hospital and Research Centre was the main speaker and moderator, along with panellists Rtn Dr Rohan Gatti, MS, MCh of Fr Muller and Dr Lavina Noronha of Ave Maria Palliative Care.
Fr J B Moras, assistant parish priest and director of Catholic Action League delivered the inaugural key note address and inaugurated by lighting the lamp along with all the dignitaries on the dais. Catholic Action League president Sachin Menezes and animator

A session on cancer awareness was presented to the audience with the latest modern electronic devices with multi-colour visual aids and with a language that was understood by all.
Causes of cancer: Viruses, sunlight, tobacco, diet, radiation, alcohol, occupational factors, environment etc.
Signals: A change in bowel or bladder habits, sores that don’t heal, unusual bleeding or discharge, obvious change in a wart or a mole, thickening of lump in the breast or elsewhere, indigestion or difficulty in swallowing, nagging cough or hoarseness etc.
Symptoms: Abdominal pain, jaundice, nausea, vomiting, swollen bladder, itchy skin, weight loss etc.
Tests: X-rays, mammograms, blood tests, FNAC, ultra sound, MRI scans, blood investigation, biopsy, CT scan, PET scans, abdominal scan, endoscopy etc.
Treatment: Surgery, Radio Therapy, Chemotherapy
Palliative care: Care given to the patient to improve the quality of life and living, treatment of symptoms, Psychological related treatments, Social and spiritual life, dignity in death, depression, anxiety, fear, group support, counselling, family meetings, mental health, making the patient happy while living and die happily.
