Illegal migrants in Saudi surrender after deadly riots

Riyadh, Nov 10 (AFP): Hundreds of illegal migrants targeted in a Saudi nationwide crackdown turned themselves in today after security forces besieged a Riyadh neighbourhood where riots had killed two people.

Men, women and children lined up carrying their belongings to board police buses transferring them to an assembly centre before their deportation, a week after a seven-month amnesty expired.

Police said they intervened yesterday following riots in the poor Manfuhah neighbourhood of the capital after foreigners attacked Saudis and other foreign expats with rocks and knives.

One Saudi and another person, whose nationality and identity remains unknown, were killed, said a police statement carried by the SPA state news agency.

Another 68 people -- 28 Saudis and 40 foreigners -- were injured and 561 were arrested.

The Manfuhah district of Riyadh is home to many illegal migrants, mostly from east Africa.

Today, police laid siege to the district while units from the National Guard and special forces were sent in, an AFP photojournalist said.

    I personally feel, people who have already experienced life abroad esp gulf should share their frank opinion with people back home, rather than telling people fancy stories of luxury and comfort here, they should also convey the struggle involved - Obvs not everyone struggles but this will help the people deciding to come on low wages n strict contracts to avoid building false dreams. "I think the person staying back home in this situation can easily save more and if not at least wil have the company of his family"

    Many labor workers ready to work in gulf, they don't see any contract ,salary (irs 12,000/ to 20,000/ seems very big for them). Without knowing, for food they have to spend 3 times more than india.. Month ends their savings as low as irs 8,000/.

    These migrants came illegally without any proper documents through border Yemen by the way of human trafficking. Most of the people are from African countries like Ethiopia and Eretria looking for their livelihood in the Kingdom. It is a unfortunate to say they did not legalize their documents in the given amnesty period because of no documents. Doing riots they lose their staying right and even they put risk their people who work legally in the Kingdom.

    The scores of people who face deportation are people who have gone there for a livelihood. Most of them unskilled labor. They have gone there paying exorbitant sums of money, pawning gold, land, houses, private loans, etc. They are people who do not understand the intricacies and risks of going there with such visas. (Azad visa) Now most of them are bound to be packed off unceremoniously.
    All these things would never happen if the visa regulations were tight right from the beginning and if many of the illegal visa agents were to face stringent action. As per my thoughts if anyone has ruined the livelihood of a human being with the motive of making illegal fast buck, it must amount to manslaughter. Because, not only they are deprived of their own livelihood, but of their families too which is a grave offense, since it ruins the life of an entire generation.
    It is high time our local politicians took heart and give some thought to this issue and resolve this at the earliest. This is a grave issue at hand and all illegal visa agents must be dealt with a severe action.

    Today's newspaper 10/11/2013 Saudi government given time for over stayers legalizing. Legalizing from 03/11/2013 penalty is applicable.

    They will continue to happen as resources and jobs become scarce...

    Dear Bollu. Forget about the powerful Sikh. Think of the BJP minister who stated that Nigerians are cancer and then apologized.
    Sometimes you have to exercise caution when you have your nationals in other countries, and that too a large number.
    Otherwise you would have to put your foot in your mouth.
    The Sardar is much smarter than the BJP minister.
