Udupi: Exam worries: 17-year-old boy at Brahmavar shoots himself to death

Udupi, Nov 7: A 17-year-old boy allegedly shot himself at Karje, Brahmavar here on Thursday November 7.

The deceased has been identified as Shreyas Shetty, son of Suresh Shetty, former president of Karje gram panchayat and agriculturist.

It is said that Shreyas was worried about failing in exams, and that he had even left home twice before.

On Thursday, he told his mother that he had spotted a monkey in their plantation located close by, and left home armed with a licensed gun saying that he would shoot the monkey.

However, even after several hours he did not return home. The mother who grew franctic alerted the neighbours and a search began.

Shreyas was found dead in the plantation, with a bullet injury on his chest.

Shreyas was first year PU student of Vidyodaya Public School. He was the youngest among three children of Suresh Shetty and Vimala. It is said that he had a licensed gun to scare away animals in his plantation.

Brahmavar police have registered a case.

    Moral of the story - don't give guns to kids. If the boy had accidentally killed some kid they might have closed it as accident case

    It is so sad news that the boy of 17 commited sucide this is not the time to discuss about these matter and about gun their parents have been broke down so please no more discussion on this heartbroken incident and first ofall he took the gun by saying that he will scare the monkies away no one knows that time why he took that gun

    A heartbroken parents, the boy failed in his earlier exams and father advised him to do good in the coming exams but the fate of the boy turns otherwise. 'May his soul rest in peace'.

    When I was small, my parents were thinking, if my son is not an engineer or doctor, his life finished. Today I can say, I am leading much more comfortable life what doctor or engineer leads. Education is must but not at the cost of peace and life.

    Today lots of avenues are there to lead decent and respectable life. Dear parents, education should be a fun not a punishment or stress.

    Very Sad news , a kid lost life . Not sure but looks like too much of parental pressure led the kid to take this drastic step !

    Having expectations for kids is a good thing , but too much expectations at such an early age is putting too much pressure on the kids .

    The best way is to take your kids into confidence ,do check what exactly they want to do ! Guide them at the best you can , no force them !

    Read properly first before commenting anything... news says its a licensed gun, it may be issued in the name of his Father, Mother or Grand father....

    Ron@Ron... For your info read clearly "It is said that he had a licensed gun to scare away animals in his plantation" . It is not said his father,mother or grandfather had..! The Licensed person has to keep the gun safe under the lock and key, please note this is required for taking a gun and it is the duty of the father mother or gr (if License is issued to him/her) to keep it OUT OF REACH,of any ..Especially children..! We have a gun license and very well follow the rules to keep away from all dangers..follow the rules please..!!

    R.I.P. Its quite sad such young life is gone. The boy wanted to end his life in any way. If not the gun, he would find some other way to end his life. If one is adamant, he/she will find a way. These days what I see is that young minds need our investment of time in terms of encouragement, love & affection and to help them to know the difference between good & evil. Unfortunately, most parents are busy in front of the idiot box (T.V.) and the kids are left alone to do whatever they want. At the end of each day, we compare our children with other bright kids of our friends & belittle them, nag them and create horrible negative effect & humiliation which has a lasting effect on these minds. Dear citizens, be careful, don't lose your kid. Invest your time & care NOW.

    This boy is a fool and his parents
    are also fools as they allowed this youngster to carry a gun. This boy has no faith in himself, killing himself because of exam. failure is nothing but madness. At 17 he is not a kid. These days we hear of many people dying in accidents but this boy killing himself for exam. failure is nothing than madness. May his soul rest in peace.

    Very discouraging news of student going for suicide because of fear of examination.Mostly due to lack parents not having enough time to nurture their son to face the future.All families need to take corrective steps in this regard in making the children strong in their faith.Thanq.

    What a tragedy! Negtive thoughts bundled with powerful emotion of fear forced this boy to take such a bad decision. In this modern age there is huge responsibility on teachers to train their students on their attitudes and they should teach them how to use their subconscious mind to succeed in their studies. Now days we can notice so many such tragic incidents happening everywhere. This is awakening time for both parents and teachers to take care.
