New Delhi, Mar 27: Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar and several NBA activists were taken into custody in New Delhi on Sunday while protesting outside the Water Resource Ministry. They were released after being detained for nearly three hours.
As per police sources, the over 150 activists were taken into custody for defying prohibitory orders in force in the area and later released after they agreed to shift to Jantar-Mantar in the national capital.
Patkar and her supporters have been protesting outside the Ministry since March 17 against lack of resettlement and rehabilitation plan for those displaced by the Sardar Sarover Dam across Narmada in Gujarat.
As the police were taking them into custody, minor skirmishes broke out between the women activists and lady constables.
A reporter of a newspaper was also allegedly manhandled by the police.
"We will wait till Tuesday and our next decision would depend on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s action," Patkar said.
She has sought the intervention of the Prime Minister to stop construction of the Sardar Sarover Dam.
