Manipal gang-rape: Custody extended to Nov 18; 108 witnesses in case

Udupi, Oct 28: The accused in the Manipal gang-rape case were on Monday October 28 produced in the district and sessions court. Their judicial custody was extended to November 18.
The main accused Yogish, Anand and Hariprasad along with Balachandra and Harindra, brothers of Yogish and Hariprasad, were produced.
Judge B M Angadi heard the case.
Public prosecutor T S Jituri told media persons that the case will next be heard on November 18, when a formal date for the trial will be decided.
He further informed that the accused have been booked with charges of kidnap, rape and issuing life threat.
"There are 108 witnesss in the case who will be cross-examined. The process will take time. The case will be heard every day, but due to reasons such as absence of witnesses or unavailability of lawyers, it may get delayed. The case may take about two to three months to conclude," he said.
The incident took place on in June this year, when a student of Manipa University was kidnapped by three men in an auto rickshaw and gang-raped. After a hunt of a whole week, the police arrested the trio amid suicide attempts by Yogish and Anand. The girl who was in hospital was discharged a week later. The case evoked protests from all quarters and hogged attention in the national media too.
