Mangalore: 16 teams vie for top spot in Bendore Church inter-parish cricket tourney

Mangalore, Oct 27: The inter-parish cricket tournament organized by St Sebastian Church, Bendore as part of its centenary celebrations began at Padau High School grounds here on Sunday October 27.
Altogether 16 teams are participating in the tournament, and matches will be held on every Sunday till November 10.
A march past of the participating teams was held during the inaugural ceremony. The tournament was inaugurated by Corporation Bank general manager Clement Pinto by hoisting the tournament flag.
Addressing the gathering, Clement Pinto lauded the organizers for giving imporance to sports and fitness by holding this tournament. He congratulated the Bendore parish on completeing a 100 years.
He further said that there are three types of healers - those who heal illness, called doctors; those who enrich a person's health and fitness by training them in sports, and third, those who heal the soul, who are called priests.
Parish priest of Bendore Church Fr Antony Serrao urged the participants to play with sportsman spirit and stressed that participation was more important than winning. He reminded the players that failure is stepping stone to success and wished them well.
Tournament incharge Christopher D'Souza welcomed the gathering while Milagres Junior College principal John Pais proposed the vote of thanks.
Ace compere Leslie Rego conducted the programme.
The winners will get a cash prize of Rs 55,555 and runners up will get Rs 44,444 besides attractive trophies. Man of the match, man of the series, best batsman, best bowler will get a cash prize of Rs 2,500 each and trophies. The valedictory will be held on November 10.
Among those present were Bendore Church centenary cultural committee convener Oswald Pais, corporator Naveen D'Souza, parish council vice-president Ronald Walder and others.
