Mangalore: Air passenger uses innovative way to smuggle gold, caught

Mangalore, Oct 26: In yet another haul, customs officials at Mangalore International Airport seized 2.5 kg of gold worth Rs 80.5 lac from a passenger on Friday October 25.

The passenger was identified as Basheer Palli Ibrahim, a resident of Ayyangeri of Bhagamandala, Madikeri.

Basheer arrived at Mangalore Airport by Air India Express flight. The gold was found in his luggage.

Basheer had made clever attempts to conceal the gold, but in vain. The 2.5 kg of gold was shaped into a clothes stand and clips used to hang clothes. He had then coated the stand and the clips with steel and silver. However, the security officials grew suspicious and found the gold on thorough checking of the luggage.

The accused was produced in the court and sent to judicial custody.

This was the third haul of gold in two days at the airport. On Thursday, 2.45 kg of gold worth Rs 76.32 lac was seized from two passengers in separate incidents.

    greed is also mother of invention - like the one he invented to bring in gold.
    Bringing high volumes of gold or even smaller quantity by "SMUGGLING" is not good for the country.

    Smuggled golds are usually bought by illegal money earned in host country. Host country should make it mandatory to disclose the source of gold in airport. This is the reason, why there is few or none of gold smuggling from Saudiarabia to India.

    Government has never put restriction on bringing gold into the country LEGALLY. For that matter anything at all.
    Government has also published the amount of duty to be paid for bringing any thing into the country from outside.
    These people are trying to put one over by trying trick the government by "SMUGGLING" these items which are very much in demand and where the smuggler can make high profit.

    Other hand, people working abroad can make representations to the Government through a authorized bodies of those NRIs to either reduce the duty to be paid or to abolish such duties completely.
    To abolish completely not possible as the local produced\manufactured items will be affected. That is why the duty is applied as a deterrent or one can say to safeguard our markets.
    We are still a developing country. As such restriction will be there for sometime to come.

    With representation NRIs have benefited to certain extent, where Government has looked into their grievances and has relented to a certain extent.
    They can keep trying again and again, until there is no need to smuggle but pay very small amount as duty.
    Everybody knows, gold smuggling affects the country very much.

    SO FAR SMUGGLING OF ONIONS HASN'T HAPPEND IN THE CONGRESS GOVERNMENT. SUPPOSSEDLY/IF BJP AND ITS ASSOCIATES RULE OUR COUNTRY SURELY ONION OUTSIDE AND INSIDE GOLD MAY FROM GULF AS WELL AS FROM PAKISTAN AND BANGALDESH.

    Necessity is the mother of invention.Man always throngs for giher earnings to cater the domestic commitments and look for various avenues in the coutry or outside.Everybody knows that people prefer working in gulf countries to fulfill their faiancial commitment.So try to bring gold which is not allowed to flow free into the country.There is noting wrong in bringing high volume of gold and govt needs to be liberalise this by charging nominal tax.Why there is no limit to bring currency value through various channels?Why restriction for gold?People are toiling outside and facing problems here in their mission for bettering the family life.
    Here politicians are living a royal life by indulging in corruption which tolerable...but not bringing gold into the country purchased by hard earned money.What a tragedy!
