Mangalore: Air passenger uses innovative way to smuggle gold, caught

Mangalore, Oct 26: In yet another haul, customs officials at Mangalore International Airport seized 2.5 kg of gold worth Rs 80.5 lac from a passenger on Friday October 25.
The passenger was identified as Basheer Palli Ibrahim, a resident of Ayyangeri of Bhagamandala, Madikeri.
Basheer arrived at Mangalore Airport by Air India Express flight. The gold was found in his luggage.
Basheer had made clever attempts to conceal the gold, but in vain. The 2.5 kg of gold was shaped into a clothes stand and clips used to hang clothes. He had then coated the stand and the clips with steel and silver. However, the security officials grew suspicious and found the gold on thorough checking of the luggage.
The accused was produced in the court and sent to judicial custody.
This was the third haul of gold in two days at the airport. On Thursday, 2.45 kg of gold worth Rs 76.32 lac was seized from two passengers in separate incidents.
