Tripoli, Oct 19 (IANS): A senior military officer was killed by gunmen Friday morning in Libyan city of Benghazi, a security source said.
"Colonel Ahmed Mustafa Al Barghati died after being shot by unknown assailants in front of his house," reported Xinhua citing Colonel Abdullah Zaidi, a security spokesman.
Al Barghati was reportedly a member of security forces of the former regime and joined the revolutionary forces during the 2011 uprising. He was appointed to lead the military police in the Libyan capital of Tripoli.
Benghazi, birthplace of Libya's revolution against former leader Muammar Gaddafi, has witnessed frequent killings and bombings against security officers who once worked for the former regime.
