End of an era: Swiss banks open up

Geneva/New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) : Heralding an end to its banking secrecy wall, Switzerland will now share bank account and other details with foreign countries, including India, even without prior intimation to concerned persons and on the basis of queries emanating from stolen data.

The move comes as a shot in the arm for foreign authorities, including from India, who have been trying hard for years to get information about suspected illicit funds parked in Swiss banks.

The Swiss Federal Council's detailed statement on sharing tax information comes a day after the country inked the OECD's Multilateral Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters. The signing of the pact allows for automatic exchange of information and mutual administrative assistance in tax matters with overseas authorities.

Known for its banking secrecy, Swiss government's proposal of deferred notification of taxpayers in "exceptional cases" would soon be discussed by (Swiss) Parliament.
Under the existing law, taxpayers had to be notified without exception before data concerning them was transmitted to the requesting state.

"Based on the results of the consultation procedure, the Federal Council has specified in its draft that deferred notification of taxpayers is possible only in exceptional cases," the Swiss government said today.

Besides, the country which is putting forward the request would have to substantiate the same.

"The requesting state will also have to substantiate its request, e.g. by claiming the investigation would risk being compromised in the event of prior notification," it said.

Noting that group requests are already possible under the existing law, the Federal Council said that in order to improve efficiency, the revision provides for a notification procedure that is tailored to group requests.

    People open you mind please.
You don't need to visit Swiss to transfer money, This is not Vijaya bank, Baroda bank or any banks we are used to.
To open a bank account in Swiss all you need is to visit the bank once with your passport and condition is there is minimum amount to be kept. Passport is mandatory.
After this all services are online, They charge 15 SFR every month for internet banking service. 1% Interest rate is applicable in some Kantons.
Sooooooo if a politician is visiting foreign countries its doesn't mean he is transferring money. This is grandma stories about ghost in the well.
Even if someone has black money and has transferred to another country. The account name would be still be in historical records and full detail can be know to were it was transferred.
Now only way someone want to get over it is totally move to another country and become a citizen there. I think its easier since these people can buy any passport they want by investment. Then same person can come back to India and he will be treated as a king(Incase of British passport)
Where as for politicians, They are screwed.

It's about time, Now all those comments to throw sand on common man's eyes will be clear. If there is no black money of Sonia or Rajiv in Swiss statement, Then imagine the result?
Will all people who donated Aam Admi party get their money back?
Let the truth prevail, If Congress really has black money then it doesn't need to stay in power, Why?
There are local Swiss banks in India, Why go abroad?

The Swiss Bank seems to be hand in glove with account holders as they have given them enough time to regularise their accounts probably by transferring funds, etc. There was no need for them to take this long to meet with this demand that has been pending for ages.

There is a saying..ie.,"Kote kolle hodeda mele kaavalugaara seeti oodida" means big parties might have already shifted their booty deposited in the bank sowewhere else.Only 'chota mota' parties might have have withdrawn their funds.
In our land also similar issue happened during 2001-2002 wherein lots of people who deposited their hard earned money in Maharastra Apex Corpn,Manipal lost their amount but big/influencial depositors were informed of the fiasco much earlier and asked to withdraw their money.

Good resolution by Swiss Bank & their Govt.
Corruption and parking illicit money abroad will become much difficult if not impossible!
Details of people who parked money in Swiss account will be exposed!
At the same time gossipers will not have basis to falsely accuse someone to tarnish their political or business opponents!

I quote yours: ITALAIN , YUVARAJA AND OTHER ITALAIN LED CONGRESS LEADERS FREQUENT SWISS TRIP WAS FOR MOVING FUNDS FROM SWISS BANKS.Unquote.

Kindly give us the proof. Without proof your comment is null and void.

PuppyLove Modi The AmulTea-Boy has eliminated the witnesses which were in papers so there is no proof in papers. However the world has watched as a proof of the greatest murderer.

You have to give us proof of BJP leaders also who were frequently making trips to Swiss.

Lastly, when the Swiss opens its doors of secrecy, will the humans keep money in Swiss banks???!!!

It is the selfish humans who are crocked.

    People,

In 2014 New Prime Minister of India will get list of huge names holding Swiss Bank account(If it is asked!!!)....

First thing new PM should do after Oath taking is ban all politicians from leaving the country till its found that they don't have any foreign bank accounts used to deposit corruption money be it Baba Ramdev, Sonia,Modi, Advani, Robert, Ahmed Patel, Yeddy, Reddy, Pawar, Karunanidhi, Jayalalitha, Koda, or anybody else.

If we bring all this looted money back to India we don't need to collect any taxes for next 10 years...

If some CHOR politicians start getting Cold Sweat its good Omen for the nation...

It is a good move by the Swiss authority. Now the question is, where are all the money that was lying in these banks for years. These banks require to give the details of those huge bank accounts from the time of inception till date. Further, the Indian authorities should question all the Indian citizens whose funds are shifted to different localities in the world and also brought back to India through backdoor as huge investments.
It is time these Alibabas are nails and in the end they deserve place behind bars.
Wake-up International community, make this globe a Transparent-World.
