Digvijay blames police for temple stampede

Bhopal, Oct 14 (PTI): People stand beside the bodies of victims killed in a stampede on a bridge in Datia.

Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh has blamed the police for the stampede near Ratangarh Temple in Madhya Pradesh's Datia district.

At least 115 people were killed and over 100 injured in the stampede near the temple yesterday, which was triggered by rumours that the bridge the devotees were crossing was about to collapse.

Singh, in a tweet last night, alleged that the "police was charging Rs 200 from every tractor to allow them entry into the no-traffic zone."

"Is this what they call good governance in Madhya Pradesh?" he asked.

He said the BJP-led state government had learnt no lesson from the tragedy at the same spot in 2006.

Over 56 pilgrims had been washed away at the same site in 2006 after water was released in the Sindh river from upstream.

After the 2006 tragedy, the state government had constructed a bridge over the river, but the mishap took place on it allegedly due to poor mismanagement of the crowd that gathered in lakhs from the nearby districts and neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

The Congress leader expressed his grief over the tragedy.

The stampede in Madhya Pradesh on a bridge in Datia was man made and not a natural disaster.

The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh failed to provide adequate protection and squeezed the devotees for an exorbitant parking money and over that the police have lathi charged the devotees. As a result devotees ran helter-skelter resulted in roomers and stampede deaths.

Utter non-sense and mismanagement of Madhya Pradesh government in the temple for devotees protection.

    Joseph...
Due to obtain political mileage during next election.. some people created havoc situation and as such disaster happened.
It's already planned act..and well-paid to create such things. Now-a-days it's happening moreover in all the places during more of people assembled.
More of CID's should be arranged amongst people to find who is behind all these things..and given rigorous punishment.
What's happened is sad and bad. Even what's happened in Katyani Temple in Bihar some months ago where people killed coming under train. It's duty of government to take appropriate steps during such events.
