Gogoi slams AGP, BJP over development

Guwahati, Oct 9 (IANS): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Wednesday rejected the claims of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) that the Congress government was reaping the fruits of development it had sowed when in power.

Terming the AGP rule as the darkest chapter in Assam's history, he said several family members of the Ulfa leaders were killed during their regime.

Recently, AGP secretary Durgadad Boro claimed that the Congress government in the state had been reaping the fruits of development works initiated by AGP government.

Slamming the erstwhile AGP government, Gogoi said: "The people did not dare to venture out in the dark. The economy of the state was in shambles with developmental activities coming to a grinding halt. Not to speak of development, the government employees did not get their salaries for months together."

"The beleaguered AGP is trying to cover up its dismal failure on all fronts when they were in power. The people are politically conscious not to fall prey to the misinformation campaign unleashed by the AGP," he said.

The chief minister said the Congress government inherited an empty exchequer and went on to build the economic edifice through a slew of fiscal reforms.

Coming down heavily on the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), Gogoi said the BJP did nothing for the development of the state when it was in power at the Centre.
